Hudson County officers take a knee with protestors

It’s been a week since stand-offs between protestors and police officers have surged in several demonstrations nationwide following George Floyd’s death. But that didn’t seem to be the case in Hudson County.

Jersey City and Union City organizers marched alongside rally members and continued to demand justice and peace for the black community Tuesday afternoon. And though protestors have chanted and marched with signs advocating for black lives, many have said they just want officers to stand in solidarity with them.

A video posted on Instagram by hummusJC showed the first city cop who took a knee with demonstrators. It was a woman.

In the next slide the video shows the other officers, who were guarding City Hall, fall in line behind the female cop’s actions. The crowd clapped and cheered, and the last slide shows the female officer smiling behind her facemask.

The peaceful protest was organized by the Jersey City Anti-Violence Coalition. It started from City Hall to the Newark Pedestrian Plaza, and according to NJ.com, some said the rally couldn’t end until all officers took a knee.

Union City followed the string of protests and held its own Tuesday afternoon. Protestors marched for blocks with signs supporting the “Black Lives Matter” movement, and one video shows some local police also taking a knee.

The video, originally posted on Instagram by thomas_johnathan, captures rally members shouting, “Take a knee!” to the officers and others dressed in suits. As one female cop begins to kneel, the crowd roars and the officers beside her can be seen doing the same.

But the fight isn’t over.
