The Crispiest Chicken You’ll Ever Make — Chicken Katsu

Chicken Katsu is a simple dish that originated in Japan, but it has also become widely popular in Hawaii, California, Australia and London! 

The deep fried, breaded chicken cutlet is topped with a delicious tonkatsu sauce it’s one of the crispiest chicken dishes you’ll ever taste. 

All you really need to make this recipe is chicken, all the typical breading ingredients like flour, eggs and breadcrumbs, and the tonkatsu sauce which can be store bought or made at home with a few ingredients.

The trick to making the chicken come out super crispy every time is the prepping technique. Always make sure to butterfly your chicken or pound it until it’s flat to fry evenly. 

This dish can be served alongside steamed rice or veggies, cabbage or even miso soup! 

The chicken can also be replaced with pork if you prefer a different cut of meat.

For the chicken
  • Butterfly chicken and season with salt and pepper.
  • Coat the chicken with flour, then egg, then panko.
  • Deep fry until golden brown.
  • Serve with tonkatsu sauce and top with scallions.
For the sauce
  • Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl.
  • Whisk the ingredients together.
  • Adjust the sauce according to your liking.

For the sauce
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 5 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tsp oyster sauce
  • 2-1/4 tsp sugar
