The Hoboken PATH Station is Closed Until Feb. 25. Consider These Alternative Travel Options

The Hoboken PATH station has officially closed for its nearly month-long infrastructure repair journey as part of a $430 million PATH Forward program to upgrade the over 100-year-old PATH system.

PATH repairs and improvements include:

  • Replacement of in-station tracks and Hoboken Interlocking
  • 4,500 feet of track repair and maintenance work
  • Restoration of passenger infrastructure such as walking platforms and staircases

The station is expected to reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 5 a.m. leaving commuters to have to find alternative routes to get into and out of the city.

Although the 25-day shutdown may cause complications for many, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said the closure is necessary and a much better option than weekend service reductions for a year to do the needed work on the two tunnels into the station.

To help commuters with alternative travel options:

1. PATH will offer free 24/7 shuttle bus service between Hoboken, Exchange Place and Newport stations.

Weekday Schedule:

  • 12 a.m. – 5:59 a.m. – service will operate approximately every 15 minutes
  • 6 a.m. – 10:59 a.m. – service will operate approximately every 5-7 minutes
  • 11 a.m. – 2:59 p.m. – service will operate approximately every 10 minutes
  • 3 p.m. – 7:59 p.m. – service will operate approximately every 5-7 minutes
  • 8 p.m. – 11:59 p.m. – service will operate approximately every 10 minutes

Weekend Schedule:

  • 12 a.m. – 5:59 a.m. – service will operate every approximately 15 minutes
  • 6 a.m. – 11:59 p.m. – service will operate every approximately 10 minutes

2. More PATH trains will run between Newport and Exchange place during peak periods. Newport Station trains should arrive every 2-4 minutes and trains arriving at Exchange Place Station every five minutes or less during rush hours. PATH will run a temporary train line between 33 Street and World Trade Center, on weekends only.

3. NJ Transit is set to increase the frequency of the No. 126 line, which runs from the Hoboken station to Port Authority Midtown Bus Terminal. To find NJ Transit schedules and fare information, click here.

4. NJ Transit also plans to add additional service on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail route, which can take you between Hoboken, Newport and Exchange Place, on weekdays between 6-10 a.m. and 3-7 p.m. NJ Transit fare is required to travel on the NJ TRANSIT system; for more information, click here.

5. NY Waterway Ferry is increasing its services

Weekdays:

  • Ferries will run every 10 minutes from Hoboken/NJT Terminal to Midtown/W 39th Street and Brookfield Place/Battery Park City during peak period hours. Peak period weekday service will run every 20 minutes from Hoboken/14th Street to Midtown/W 39th Street and every 10-14 minutes from Hoboken/14th Street to Brookfield Place/Battery Park City starting Monday, Feb. 3.
  • Service from both Hoboken terminals to Midtown/W 39 Street will be extended to 10 p.m. from Monday-Thursday.

Weekends:

  • NY Waterway service from both Hoboken terminals to Midtown/W 39 Street will be extended to 11:59 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. On Sundays, additional service will be available from the Hoboken/NJT Terminal to Midtown/W 39th Street from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

To ride the ferries, PATH Customers will need to purchase a $3 ticket through the NY Waterway app or at terminal ticket counters. When boarding the ferry, make sure to activate the ferry ticket and show your PATH fare card, SmartLink or MetroCard to the Waterway attendant.  If you are a TAPP user, show the digital cross honoring pass found at the top of the Real-Time section of the RidePATH app.
